Works In Clay

The Beginning

Glazed Stoneware Clay & Glass

30" x 30"

01/32

As in life, fire incinerates all that is impure.

Similar refinement happens to clay within the inferno of the kiln chamber. This torrent distills and discards the ephemeral and presents to the viewer the purity of the clay process.

Clay is an expressive medium which demands continual exploration, it begs to be molded and manipulated. My methods are a combination of thrown and hand building techniques that culminate into dramatic sculptural forms. I experiment with a variety of glazed and unglazed surfaces and always searching for new ways of expression with this medium. Over the years I have worked in earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. An important approach is directness and honesty in the use of materials.  I explore broad shapes and undulating surfaces allowing the clay to speak to me as I work. These pursuits of line and texture range a broad spectrum. Many times reminiscent of classical shapes and other times I drawn from abstract expressionist pioneered by Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko and Peter Voulkos.
